installation shots

Cut/close to home is a video installation. It is part of Fly-by-night curated by Chris Mitchell for Nuit Blanche, September 29, 2007

7 p.m. to 7a.m. Room 205, The Gladstone Hotel, 1214 Queen St. W., Toronto, ON M6J 1J6

Cut/close to home is a video loop of a man and woman fighting in the boxing ring at Sully's Gym. It is done in a rotoscoping technique, where animation is drawn on top of live action, and is projected on several layers of semi-transparent plastic cut in narrow strips and hung like curtains.

An evocative original score creates a sense of submerged longing. Viewers can separate the image with their hands and walk through the video to the bed on the other side. As they move into and through the curtains, they become the agent who breaks the cycle of violence; the projection will begin to disappear, and the fighting will be behind them.
